Cover PROFIT big data experimentsOver the past two years, there has been plenty of experiments with all kinds of data, from Facebook messages to Google statistics and from booking data to reviews. Some experiments led to useful insights, others led to nothing. All experiences are brought together in one report. The report contains the learnings up to now, in the coming months the learnings of some ongoing experiments will be added.

Data from booking software

Up to now, analyses with data from booking software are the most useful. By gathering data about arrival and departure date, booking date and country of origin, nice analyses can be made of booking patterns of different nationalities for different holiday periods. By comparing the data of several companies (anonymously), differences can also be identified. In consultation with a few entrepreneurs, a standardised factsheet has now been prepared, which is compiled for all entrepreneurs who provide booking data, provided that sufficient data is available from other companies to enable a benchmark analysis.

Manual booking dataData from booking software are not always easy to obtain. To make this easier, manuals have been compiled for a number of commonly used software packages. You can consult these below, as well as general information about submitting booking data.


Data analysis based on reviews

Our evaluation of these data has allowed us to prepare a comparison between the different coastal regions. For example, the reviews for destination X are compared with reviews for destination Y. The computer will look at the words featured in the reviews, whereby stop words such as ‘the’ and ‘a’ will not be included. The computer will subsequently produce a selection of words which often feature in the one group of reviews, but not, or to a much lesser extent, in the other group. This will clearly show which words are distinctive for these groups of reviews. It’s also possible to create an automatic summary of sentences within which these words are used, producing an overall image of the context.
